If you want to see something truly original, make your way over to the Beer Can House. A true labour of love, the Beer Can House is a home that's completely covered with more than 50,000 flattened beer cans! John, the home's owner, started applying the cans to his walls and roof back in 1968. Today, the home is a popular tourist attraction. And, in case you're wondering, John says that he, his wife, and their friends personally drank each beer!
For something a little more scholarly, take a trip to Rice University. A top school, Rice features great academics and a beautiful campus. As an added benefit, it's not far from the downtown area - and is surrounded by a bunch of local cafes and boutiques.
If you are a sports fan, head to downtown Houston. Within a few blocks, you'll see Minute Maid Park - where the Houston Astros Play; the Houston Dynamo Soccer Stadium; and the Toyota Center - where the Houston Rockets play. In Houston the oldest working ranch in the US is available for tourist visits and viewing. The ranch is called George Ranch Historical Park.
