San Antonio, TX Guide

Located deep in the heart of Texas, San Antonio has lots to offer, from historical missions, fine-art museums and numerous amusement parks, to great dining and drinking. The people and culture are interesting and vibrant. Downtown San Antonio is probably the liveliest in the US.

San Antonio is a prime convention destination, so hotel rooms can get quite booked up. The peak season will generally be late fall and spring. Because of the business travellers, lower rates can be found over the weekends at numerous hotels.

Top Attractions of San Antonio, TX

A visit to the city of San Antonio is only complete with a stroll down the River Walk, which is perfect for exploring by day and partying by night. The San Antonio River runs right through the centre of town. Guided barge excursions depart regularly. Many hotels, shops and restaurants are found alongside the River Walk on either side of the developed and most popular downtown loop. The River Walk extends towards the Rivercenter Mall at the east end, being further developed south and north of downtown. You can either stroll along on the stone pathways, or take in all of the sights by boat.

The downtown of San Antonio is the hub of San Antonio's nightlife. There are scores of lodging, theatres, galleries and dining options including over ten 19th century historic bed and breakfasts next to the Riverwalk.

Also downtown, you will find the Alamo, which is thought of as hallowed ground. It was once a mission and was also where the Battle of Alamo took place in 1836, when Davy Crockett and crew took on more than 1,000 Mexican soldiers; however, the Alamo still looks very much the same today, as preservation efforts are always being maintained.

A little bit farther to the north, you will find Sea World. There, you can enjoy shows, rides, and exhibits that get you up close and personal with the underwater world. The most popular feature at Sea World is the Shamu shows. If you sit towards the front, you can even be part of the killer whale's performance - as a “splash victim"!

Fiesta is an annual 10-day fun filled and multi-cultural celebration with more than 100 events taking place.

On the northwest side of San Antonio lies La Cantera - a community that offers stunning views of the Texas Hill Country. La Cantera is also home to a golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. For 250 acres, you can measure your skills up against a true golf legend!

Once you have worked up an appetite, take some time to enjoy San Antonio's Mexican food. You will be hard-pressed to find better cuisine in Mexico! And, luckily, there is practically a Mexican restaurant on every corner.
