Grand Canyon, AZ
Few holiday destinations evoke the scenic wildness and splendour of the United States better than Arizona's Grand Canyon. Its sheer size and intensity can often overwhelm visitors, especially at sunrise and sunset when the colours blaze out of the terraced buttes and mesas.
One of the true natural wonders of the world, they don't call it grand for nothing. It runs 277 miles in length, ten miles across and one mile deep. But these statistics, impressive as they are, can't prepare you for your first sight of the natural splendour of the Canyon with its sandstone walls, forests of fir and pine, and the river, streams and waterfalls. It also offers ultimate adventure experiences. Depending on the time of year, you can bike, boat, camp, fish, hike, go white-water rafting, and watch birds and wildlife. The Canyon also stands as a living geological museum showing the history of the earth in its many layers and more than 1500 plant and 400 animal species live in the canyon today.
