Kilmainham Gaol

Kilmainham Gaol, Inchicore Rd, Dublin 8, Ireland
Built in 1792, Kilmainham Gaol has been a major stage in the history of Irish Republicanism before being closed in 1924. The leaders of the 1916 Ester Rising were executed here. This act was the catalyst that led to Irish independence. The prison was closed in 1924. Kilmainham Gaol is now a museum showcasing the political and penal history of the prison. Tours include an audio-visual show.
