Kuala Lumpur Guide – Spend Less, Do More

Kuala lumpur skylineYou've visited the Petronas Twin Towers and walked across the Skybridge, suspended between the two monster buildings, contemplating how small you really are as you look out over Kuala Lumpur. You've visited the Batu Caves, valiantly fending off monkeys as they cheekily plot to steal your edibles. Being a tourist, after all, can be a challenging pursuit at times. Finally, you shopped till you dropped, literally, at Bukit Bintang, the city's entertainment and shopping center district. Trendy and contemporary, yet maintaining a sense of history, this vast wonderland of both local and international goods can keep a shopper entertained for days – not to mention the nightclubs. If you're looking for a more local experience of Kuala Lumpur, the bustling metropolis has much more to offer than what meets the eye.

For the animal lovers...

Visit the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary and say hi to its resident gentle giants – Borneo Pygmy Elephants. You will get to get up and personal, as well as feed them or if you're lucky, even assist in bathing them – dependent on the weather and the water level at the river and how early you get there. The sanctuary is a not-for-profit organisation that is committed to the care of abandoned elephants (only elephants who are injured or those with a zero percent chance of survival in the wild are relocated to the sanctuary), and while is free to visit, donations are very much welcome and encouraged to lend a hand so these elephants can have a home in the future.

Putra MosqueAnother option you have is eagle feeding in Kuala Selangor. You will go out onto the river in a motorboat. The majestic birds will gather and circle overhead as you throw pieces of meat into the river, swooping down to snatch them up from the water. This is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter and one you should definitely experience during your time in Kuala Lumpur.

Once night falls, make sure to venture out into the woods to see the fireflies. As your boat drifts down the river, a million fireflies will light twinkle in the trees around you. Perhaps combine this with a seafood dinner on the water, and this will be a magical experience and a night you will not be forgetting soon.

Forget Bukit Bintang...

Petaling marketsAnd go for something a little more cultural. Meander through the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex for local Malaysian crafts such as batik, wood carvings and pottery. If you get hungry, explore a night market (or pasar malam) such as Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Petaling Street or Jalan Alor (in KL's former red light district) for a gathering of hawker stalls and inexpensive local delicacies. Are you a fan of durian? That's contentious, but you'll definitely enjoy some satays or Hainanese chicken rice. Also try some rojak, roti and ais kacang (dessert).

Forgo your standard dining experience...

And dine in the dark instead! You've saved on your accommodation, so you deserve a special evening out. For something truly unique that will satisfy the foodie within you, enjoy your entire meal in pitch blackness. Savour the succulent textures and flavours of your food without the distractions of your other senses. A tip? Don't dress too nicely as forking food into your mouth without being able to see it can prove to be quite a challenge.

If you're wondering what to do with the last couple of days of your trip...

Why not hire a car and take a trip to Melaka (Malaysian name), also spelt Malacca? It is two hours south of Kuala Lumpur. Previously colonised by the Dutch, Portuguese and British, you will see a distinctive blend of architectural styles. The port city also showcases the city's Chinese, Indian and Islamic influences. Not only does it offer amazing local cuisine known as Nyonya, which is local to the area and difficult to locate elsewhere, Melaka has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural significance.
